Alcohol Calculation

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends tht the dividing line between "Social Drinking" and Alcohol Abuse is 40g of Ethanol per day.  Ethanol, also called Ethyl Alcohol, pure alcohol, grain alcohol or drinking alcohol.

The UK Government recommends the safe drinking as follows (converting units of alcohol into gms/day).

For women it is recommended that they not exceed 16-24g per day or not more than 112g per week.

For men it is recommended that they not exceed 24-32g per day or not more than 168g per week.

Despite the thousands of research projects that have been carried out on the subject of alcohol abuse there is still no totally specific quantitative test which will confirm the amount of alcohol a particular person is drinking or has been drinking in the recent past.

Alcohol has a specific gravity of 0.785 i.e. it is lighter than water.  A bottle of wine at 12% ABV has 750 x 0.12 = 90ml of alcohol.  This is 90 x 0.785 - 70gms of alcohol.  Therefore one half bottle is approximately equal to the upper safe daily limit for men (32gms per day).
